Market Analysis
Historically there has always been a robust market for period horror films. The Pit and the Pendulum was made in 1961 for a mere $200,000 and went on to gross many times that in worldwide sales. It continues to be shown on satellite, cable and network channels to this day. Another Vincent Price period horror The Witchfinder General remains popular thirty years after it’s production and has recently enjoyed a successful DVD launch. From the early days of horror to the recent success of films such as Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Sleepy Hollow and From Hell audiences have always flocked to see horror in a historic setting.

Hammer exploited the popularity of Gothic Horror in the 60s and 70s by increasing the overall profitability of their output. Hammer films were cheap to produce but nonetheless appeared lavish, making use of quality British actors and cleverly designed or second-hand sets. During its most successful years Hammer dominated the horror film market enjoying worldwide distribution and considerable financial success.

In the last six years Hammer has reported consecutive years of profit culminating in the sale of its library to Icon in 2006. As a genre Horror is an extremely profitable one. What sets period Horror apart from other sub genres is its longevity.
